Three ways a Viking grill lights
The first question on the phone is which grill it is, because Viking’s outdoor grills light in three different ways and each one fails differently.
The current 5 Series, with model numbers starting VQGI5 for built-in and VQGFS5 for freestanding, lights with glowing hot-surface igniters and needs power from an outdoor GFCI outlet. The older T-Series sparks from a battery kept behind the control panel. The older E-Series plugs in, lights by itself and relights a burner if the flame blows out.
So “it will not light” can mean a tripped outlet, a flat battery or a burner that gas is not reaching, and the fix for one does nothing for the others.
What the deck does to a grill
A grill on a deck near the lake spends months in damp air and weeks under a cover. Water sits in the drip tray after rain, a battery or an outlet quietly gives up, and the first cookout of the year is when it all shows at once. None of that is a reason to replace a grill built from separate burners, valves and igniters; it is a reason to open it up and look.

- It is not supposed to. The current 5 Series grills light with hot-surface igniters that glow rather than spark, and they take their power from the outdoor outlet through a low-voltage transformer. When nothing glows at all, the outlet and its reset button come first, long before the burner does.
