If one burner clicks but never catches — Turn it off and let it cool, then set the cap back level with the head's tabs clear of the igniter. One more try; still no flame, book it. Book this week

What fails on this series
- One burner sparks but will not light Most often the burner itself: a cap off level, head tabs turned onto the igniter, or ports sealed by a boil-over. A clean, seated burner that still refuses points to its igniter or valve. Book this week
- Every burner sparks and none catches Gas is not reaching the top. Viking's manual names a closed supply valve or an interrupted supply. If a gas smell comes with it, leave the house and call the gas utility first. Call today
- Sparking that carries on once the flame is steady A wet or dirty igniter is the ordinary reason. When a clean, dry burner keeps at it, the manual points to the range's electrical supply, its grounding or polarity, which an electrician checks. Book this week
- The broiler stays cold Check the temperature knob first: turned beyond the broil mark, the oven will not broil. Set right and still cold, the infrared broiler on a VGR5 or the broil elements on a VDR5 need testing. Book this week
- The oven will not bake On a VGR5, the hidden gas bake burner and whatever lights it; on a VDR5, the concealed bake element or its control. Either one is a diagnosis job, not an owner check. Book this week
Three ranges share the name
A VGR5 is gas throughout: sealed burners on top, and below them an oven heated by a hidden bake burner, with the GourmetGlo infrared broiler across the top of the cavity. A VDR5 puts the same sealed top over an electric oven with split bake and broil elements. The VGIC5 trades the sealed burners for open ones.
The VGR5 and VDR5 light with SureSpark ignition, and all three relight on their own. The knob is a gas valve and a switch at once, so clicking is simply how this series starts a flame; clicking that never stops is the part worth noting.
Today’s models carry four digits after the letters, VGR5364 or VDR5484 for example. Viking’s documentation index also lists shorter numbers such as VGR530 and VDR548, now discontinued. Ranges tagged VGSC5 or VDSC5 appear in that index as 5 Series too, but they sit with the older Professional ranges in the finder.
Open burners on a VGIC5
A spill on the open-burner model does not stay on a sealed top. Lift the grate, take out the bowl resting in the grate support, and if the spill went lower, draw out the drip pan; Viking asks for each to be washed in hot, soapy water. Caps go back level, their tabs against the outside edge of the burner. Flames that lift off the ports, burn yellow or sound noisy mean the burner wants cleaning, or a technician’s adjustment.
Questions about the 5 Series ranges
Why does my Viking 5 Series range click when a burner is already lit?
That is automatic re-ignition. Whenever a flame goes out while gas is still flowing, the igniters spark until it relights, so a boil-over that snuffs it starts the clicking again. Steady clicking under a steady flame is different: let the burner dry, and if it continues, call Viking Appliance Repair Mercer Island at (206) 208-3377.
Can I light a 5 Series burner by hand during a power cut?
Viking says no. Its manuals for these ranges warn that the electric igniters stop in a power failure and the range should not be operated until power is back, with the oven control left at OFF. A brief outage needs no reset afterwards; the range simply carries on working when the power returns.
