What fails on this series
- Warm inside, HH on the display The compartment has sat above its setting for a long stretch: a smothered front grille in summer, a fan, or a cooling fault that has loaded the evaporator coil with frost. Call today

Two units, one grille
Viking’s outdoor refrigeration comes as two 24-inch cabinets: the VRUO5241D, a solid-door refrigerator that goes under a counter or stands on its own, and the VDUO5241D, fitted with refrigerated drawers instead of a door. Both push their heat out through the grille along the bottom front, beneath the door, so a planter, a cooler or a pile of cushions set against it costs them cooling. Viking wants that grille brushed or vacuumed at least once or twice a year and advises against a custom-made replacement.
What an island deck asks of it
Summer is the hard season: sun on the stainless, a grill working a few feet away, and a door opened every few minutes. Viking recommends a spot out of direct sunlight and away from anything hot, on a grounded, dedicated circuit with no extension cord. After any change to the setting, give the compartment a full day before judging the display.
At the other end of the year, Viking wants the unit shut down once overnight lows reach 38°F, and says not to put a cover over it, because a cover holds condensation against the cabinet.
Questions about the outdoor refrigerator and drawers
Should I unplug the outdoor fridge when it stops cooling?
No. Viking's manual asks you to leave it plugged in and get a technician, because lost cooling can come from a heavy coat of frost on the cooling coil, and switching off turns that frost into more water than the defrost drain can take. Can I hose the unit down along with the rest of the deck?
No. Viking warns against spraying or splashing hose water on it, since water can reach the electrics and cause a shock. Clean the stainless with a soft cloth, warm water and a mild detergent, rubbing along the grain, then rinse with a clean damp cloth. Keep leaves and grit clear of the bottom grille.
