If nothing glows when you push a knob in — Press reset on the outdoor GFCI outlet. If the grill next to it is dark as well, look at the grill's power first. Still no glow: book. Book this week

If the igniter glows but the burner will not take — Knob off, wait five minutes, and check that no breeze is crossing the burner. One more try, then book. Book this week

If one ring of the power burner works and the other does not — Turn the failed ring's knob off and cook on the one that lights. Note which ring it was when you book. Book this week

If you smell gas around the burner — Shut off its gas supply, put out any flame and open the lid with care. If the smell stays, keep everyone back and call the gas utility or fire department. Call today

What fails on this series
- No glow from the igniter A tripped GFCI outlet, a connector that has worked loose, or, where the burner shares the grill's transformer, a fault on the grill side. The igniter itself is the last suspect. Book this week
- Igniter glows, burner stays unlit Wind across the cutout, a burner not seated on its frame after cleaning, or a blocked burner, venturi or orifice. Viking wants those checked at the start of every season. Book this week
- A knob that is stiff or will not turn Viking's checklist says to call for service rather than force it; a binding knob usually points at the valve behind it. Book this week
- Flames yellow all over The burner is short of air, which its air shutter sets. A few orange tips are normal in dusty or greasy air; a flame yellow from base to tip is not. Book this week
Two burners for the island
Viking makes two gas accessories to sit in the island next to a 5 Series grill. The VQGSB5131 is 13 inches wide and carries a pair of burners for smaller pans. The VQGPB5201 is a 20-inch power burner: one cast brass burner with two rings, the outer ring on the left knob and the inner ring on the right, each able to run alone.
Both light like the current grill, with a hot-surface igniter that heats for a few seconds before the knob turns to LITE. Side burners from the older T-Series and E-Series grills spark from a button instead.
Where the power comes from
A side burner with no glow is a power question first. Its power comes either from a GFCI outlet of its own inside the island or, through its harness, from the grill’s transformer. Viking names a tripped outlet and a connector shaken loose in shipping as the likely reasons the electrics stop.
Wind is the other thing a deck adds: Viking’s checklist says to wait for a breeze across the burner to drop, and suggests a wind barrier for built-in units in exposed spots.
Questions about the side burners and power burners
Why did my side burner go dark at the same moment as the grill?
It may run on the grill's power. Viking lets a side or power burner draw from its own outdoor GFCI outlet or from the grill's transformer, through the harness that comes with it. When both die together, start at the grill's outlet, then ring Viking Appliance Repair Mercer Island at (206) 208-3377.
How long do I hold the knob in before turning it to LITE?
Five to seven seconds, with the cover open, while the igniter heats. You will hear no click, because the igniter glows rather than sparks. If the burner has not lit within four seconds of LITE, turn it off and wait five minutes before trying again, so gas does not gather around it.
