Every Viking carries a plate with its model and serial numbers, and it is rarely somewhere you would look without being told. The positions below come from Viking’s own manuals for each series. Most of them need nothing more than an oven door opened or a tray slid out.

Why the tag is worth two minutes

The model number sorts a Viking. Its letters say what the appliance is, VGR on the gas ranges, VDR on the dual fuel ones, VQGI on a built-in grill, and the digits after them place it in a series and usually give the width. Width alone says little: a 36-inch 5 Series range and a 36-inch 7 Series range are built around different burners.

The serial number matters for another reason. Viking’s warranty wording says the date of manufacture is identified by the serial tag, so the tag is the appliance’s own record of when it was built. Each of these manuals also has blanks for both numbers, with a note that you will need them if service is ever required.

Ranges and wall ovens

• 5 Series and 7 Series ranges (VGR5, VDR5, VGR7, VDR7): open the oven door and look up under the control panel.
• 3 Series ranges: on a gas RVGR3, underneath the front edge of the control panel; on a dual fuel RVDR3, open the oven door and look under the control panel.
• Older Professional gas ranges (VGSC and VGCC): oven door open, under the control panel. A duplicate label sits on the back of the range.
• Tuscany ranges (TVDR): pull out the storage drawer. The plate is on the inside wall of the range.
• 5 and 7 Series wall ovens (VSOE, VDOE, VSOF, VDOF): door open, on the top left of the oven opening, under the control panel.
• 3 Series wall ovens (RVSOE, RVDOE): door open, under the control panel on the left-hand side.

Out on the deck

• 5 Series grills (VQGI5, VQGFS5): on the underside of the drip tray, on the heat shield behind the front panel, or in both places. Slide the tray out only when the grill is cold. This plate also shows which gas the grill was set up for.
• Older T-Series and E-Series grills: under the drip tray, in the rear left corner beside the gas inlet pipe.
• 5 Series side and power burners (VQGSB5, VQGPB5): the rating plate is on the heat shield behind the front panel or on the back of the unit. The same manual also names the underside of the drip tray, where there is one, and the inside left panel wall.
• Outdoor refrigerator and refrigerated drawers (VRUO5241, VDUO5241): inside the cabinet on the left side, near the top. That plate carries a service number as well as the serial number. A later page of the same manuals puts the numbers on the upper wall behind the light, so look there too.

Where the plate is behind a front panel, leave the panel on. The drip tray is the owner’s side of the grill; the heat shield is the technician’s.

When the tag is missing or worn

Tags fade and peel, outdoors especially. Try the second position for that appliance first, then the manual and the paperwork from the purchase. Failing both, describe what you have: the width, what is on the cooktop or the grill, gas or electric oven, and a photograph of the front.

Before you ask

Do you need the model number, the serial number, or both?

Both, copied exactly, letters and digits. The model number says which Viking it is; the serial number is the one Viking’s warranty wording ties the date of manufacture to. The tag on my old Viking range has worn off. Is that a problem?

Rarely a serious one. The older VGSC and VGCC Professional gas ranges carry a duplicate label on the back, which can be read once the range is pulled forward during the visit. Until then, the width, the cooktop layout and whether the oven is gas or electric narrow it down. Nothing needs taking apart beforehand.
